I grew up in Rocky River, which is a suburb on the Westside of Cleveland, Ohio. As a child, my mom stayed at home with my younger brother and me, and my dad worked for companies that provide relocation services. Like most people, my family played a large role in shaping me as a person. My parents’ empathy and desire to help others made me realize at a young age that I wanted my career to focus on enriching the lives of others. I came to Miami University with this in mind. I have always believed that it is important to understand the inner workings of the human mind in order to help people, so I chose to major in psychology.

Throughout my first three years as a psychology major, I thought that I wanted to attend graduate school and receive my Ph.D. in counseling psychology, so that I could help people enhance their mental health. However in the fall of my senior year, I realized that what intrigued me most about all of my coursework was the distinct connection between mental and physical health. It was then that I realized I no longer wanted to be a counseling psychologist, but that I wanted to attain a graduate degree which focused on a more holistic approach to health and well being. My research advisor Dr. Rose Marie Ward suggested attending graduate school to receive a degree in health education and promotion instead. Upon research, I found that this was the perfect degree for me to attain in order to achieve my career goals. I was extremely excited when I was accepted into Miami University’s program because I knew that I would receive the classroom education I needed to make me an effective promoter of physical and mental health to others. I am looking forward to being the graduate assistant for the Employee Health and Well-Being Program because it will give me a hands on experience that will prepare me for my future career as a health educator.
